Greetings Friends

I make this publication available at the beginning of each month. Two short articles offer some examples of how change can affect today's seniors. Change can be generated by internal and external factors such as our fluctuating body chemistry and/or by stressors in our immediate social and physical environment. We need to be aware of increasing forgetfulness and be on the alert especially with other seniors in our presence. Ever thought you could have an endless vacation doing something you're passionate about? Humans have a knack of finding ways to pass the time and forgetting about the clock . . . making an example of a good kind of forgetting.

The Cost of Forgetfulness

. . . community and worldwide

One evening as we began a little shopping spree at Wal-Mart we noticed a lady's wallet lying by itself in a buggy. Without opening the buttoned strap that secured it we could see that it had numerous plastic cards, probably some important documents and most likely cash. Perplexed, my wife handed it to me not knowing what to do with someone else's personal property. My first reaction was that someone nearby at that very moment was experiencing a lot of anxiety at the prospect of losing one of the most valuable possessions we all carry with us - our purses and wallets. I imagined her escalating panic with fears of impending theft of money, credit cards and even identity with all the ensuing hassles to follow. I can't imagine the cost of forgetfulness to individuals and community and worldwide. Recently arrived in the age group termed 'senior', sometimes I do forget important appointments or things I planned to purchase. Besides a computer calendar it helps to keep a planner at home which has a space to write in for every day of the year. I keep my wallet securely in my right front pocket, but it's unbelievable how the vanity of fashion has created for some folks a complex situation with purses and bags which can so easily go astray. I suggest a boldly lettered prominent sign: Do not leave your valuables unattended! We can all be pleased to know that the wallet was returned to its owner within an hour.

A Lifelong Vacation

. . . an enjoyable healthy distraction

According to Google AdWords 2,240,000 global searches are made on the internet every month using the search word "hobbies". I may be wrong, but I doubt if these figures reflect the number of hobbies actually present. In any case, I suggest there are four broad categories of hobby interests: wildlife, collecting, gardening, and scale modeling. We could also add reading which almost everyone does. Some pessimists will say that a hobby is a waste of time; but when you realize how much technology has changed everything, we humans have had to make numerous adjustments in a very short space of time. The harmful effects of stress caused by all these changes can be dealt with by medications but also by finding a hobby. There is a good case for this for what is already known. Whether or not it is something beyond the mundane, a hobby can be an enjoyable healthy distraction from our present anxieties. Serious attention with a hobby increases our expertise as we gain useful knowledge. Hobbies keep us active in all ways and offer an emotional outlet and a valuable quiet retreat away from a difficult, seemingly mad world. See Bill Malone's article, Get Into a Hobby It's Good for You!

To end the misery that has afflicted the human condition for thousands of years, you have to start with yourself and take responsibility for your inner state at any given moment. That means now.
