A Movie Lesson
βIs this something you value?β
My wife likes to watch movies on the internet. One particular serial was available to her without cost and produced in a foreign country. It has about forty episodes. Every evening for two weeks we gathered around the computer to watch a few episodes in colour. It reminded me of a time when we would rush to the radio to hear a Dick Tracy drama or that Teddy Bear Party that used to come on at noon. This movie had no subtitles but it turned out to be just as interesting to me as if it were created in English. Although I couldn't remember a scene that didn't show an adult using tobacco and/or alcohol, the acting was superb. Even the very young children and the animals looked completely natural. Filming took place in wood paneled offices, on busy streets, in cars, markets, dirt roads in the country, or in remote mountain and river areas. The main characters were undoubtedly seasoned actors and actresses playing convincing roles. Now this movie was about the life of a nation with an almost extinct middle class. The hero was depicted as a tall young man dreaming to complete his industrial project. Thwarted by the mafia and a corrupted government steeped in greed, murder and addiction, he actually won in the end. But with no insurance or social security systems in place many of the characters are devastated in one way or another. It's difficult to predict an outcome until after the next episode gets rolling. I did notice something very different and seldom shown in western cinema. There was always time for the characters to get together and have a lunch or a dinner around a table with fish, bread, cabbage or watermelon, etc.; either in a house, restaurant, or countryside. Every episode depicted at least two of these gatherings. If nothing else, this movie sends a message about family health: the importance of regular family dinners. Is this something you value? If there has been changes in this area how does it affect you?

"All we can perceive, experience, think about, is the surface layer of reality, less than the tip on an iceberg. Underneath the surface appearance, everything is not only connected with everything else, but also with the Source of all life out of which it came."
