Greetings Friends

Welcome to August's newsletter. This publication is about internal and external change being always present in our lives. Personal memories can be encapsulated in reality and become an important social cornerstone. Judging by the stories we share, our memorabilia is alive and well.

Lately, I have trouble getting shoes to last. I assume it's because of mass production. Surely, the dwindling presence of the neighbourhhood shoe store has created poor value for our money. Changes like these have added to the frustration of finding good shoes for ageing feet. The result can be a costly poor "fit".

Memory and Memorabilia

. . . a sense of personal worth knowing we have contributed something valuable.

People have always collected and today it's not directly connected with survival. At first it is a puzzle to try and understand why people collect things. I don't mean collecting to the extent of hoarding but an almost obsessive attention to one kind of object. It could be sports memorabilia, entertainers' keepsakes, cars, autographs or pet stones. The list is endless. So why do people collect? An anthropologist, Marjorie Akin states that collectors collect because their objects can connect the collector to a valued past, and Terry Shoptaugh, a university archivist thinks that collecting helps people to relive the past. A real object can be something to rely on more than a memory. This might be the case with a keepsake which has a specific association with some past event. Akin states that it may be just aesthetics that inspires collectors or the need to complete a line of object types, or also for profit. What is significant is that collectibles and their stories are intertwined. The authors in “I Remember When” state that experiencing memories and sharing stories are so beneficial because they connect people, creating friendships and in the process we feel less alone. Sharing memorabilia or experiences can also be empowering. In the same way sharing collectibles using my "memory cube" gives me a sense of personal worth. To help build trust and foster the exchange of insights I designed this cube to facilitate small group activities that involve communicating memories / memorabilia during "innovative play" activities. Conversation with memorabilia may help us recall significant memories allowing us to change our preconceptions.

If the Shoe Fits . . .

"... a lot of work and abuse"

I always thought a foot was a rather complex delicate support system. I discovered I was correct. With 26 bones, 33 joints and over a hundred ligaments on each foot we put a lot of work (and abuse) on our feet. Statistics reveal that at 65 our feet have walked over 75,000 miles and supported several million tons. Ageing increases our foot size and width, the balls of the feet lose their fatty pads, the arch flattens, ligaments and tendons get looser and weaker, skin is drier, nails become thicker and coloured, and toes and feet become crooked. To make things more complicated some of the following factors can add to foot problems: diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, obesity, and the wearing of an improper shoe style. Many people who can't find a good shoe fit resort to Orthopedic Shoes, but most of us need to consider the following simple guidelines when purchasing our regular new shoes:

  • Stand on the foot measuring scale at time of purchase
  • Have a little finger width between longest toe and end of the inside of the shoe.
  • Choose a shoe which matches the shape of your foot
  • Generally, shoe material will not stretch so make sure they're not a tight fit
  • Avoid pressure on bunions, etc. by choosing a larger toe box area.

That was easy. Now all I have to do is find a store which can fit my comfort size and budget. Reference: The Ageing Foot
