From The Viewpoint

reminisce-viewpoint mattersCould we dare say that reminiscing is as important as sleeping and eating? Often a memory that surfaces is like an adventure giving us a good story to share in our own individual way. It may even evoke nourishment and validation in others and ourselves. On reflection, experiences like that sharpen my appreciation of my purpose for being here. Just knowing that someone appreciates me for the validation I bring makes a big difference. I might start chatting by asking simple questions about family, home, school life, etc. A senior especially, can possess a great wealth of stories and given the opportunity will enjoy sharing it. Everything is viewpoint with no two stories the same. Now I must reminisce a little. My Dad was a quiet person who enjoyed making things, woodwork, crafts, and cabinets. In my youth and onwards I developed interests in writing, painting, and expressing abstract ideas. But he was much more practical and undoubtedly a lot of it reflected his experiences of the The Great Depression. Dad chose to live in the shadow of employment all his life but I would venture towards self employment. Still, the fact is I have his genes so who knows if different circumstances in his early life would have resulted in a different career direction. On the subject of reminiscence Kristine Dwyer writes about the benefits of reminiscing in her article "Linking the Past to the Present" and how to apply some simple guidelines towards achievement. After reading her article I can say I just know a little bit more about this subject and how deep it is.

My senior exercise today will be to use at least one of Kristine's suggestions in my communication.
